We all get the feeling sometimes of feeling like we have a mountain to climb when it comes to what we need to do and achieve in life. It happens to everyone who is a high achiever, people who want to use their limited time here on earth in an impactfull manner.
I get the feeling all the time and I just couldn’t take it anymore so I decided to do something about it. The feeling in and of itself is crippling and it turns you into a fearful procrastinator. It is something that you should consciously devise ways to challenge head on.
In my daily work, I must do a lot of learning new technologies and teach them. I need to always be abreast with the latest tools, trends and new ways of doing things. It’s just the nature of my business. All this can be a bit overwhelming because on top of all that I must deal with my own clients that I do work for, some difficult and others not. I wrote something about bad clients here.
Anyway, let me cut to the chase. I decided to put down a timetable. They are many ways to do this. You can use an app on your phone or just plainly have one hanged somewhere you can see. I used an app so that I can always glance at it whenever I’m out of office or home.
A timetable is just an accountability method really. You feel guilty when you don’t do what you are supposed to do when you are supposed to do it. A timetable doesn’t not always mean that you must follow it religiously but it helps keep track of what needs to be done and even if you skip it you can always get back to it.
I know it feels like we are back to school with timetables but believe me the concept still applies in your work life and I’m talking to achievers who are hungry for knowledge and impact driven individuals.
KAIZEN- a Japanese business philosophy of continuous improvement of working practices and personal efficiency.
Practise KAIZEN daily and breakdown those seemingly insurmountable workloads into small manageable parts. This is the practice that us who write software for a leaving have mastered and it works like magic. A task that seemed like an impossible suddenly seems manageable and procrastination is no longer an issue.
Procrastination is such a time thief and a killer of dreams. So, please get out there get a pen a paper if you must and account for your time while you still have it. Time is the only resource which is not renewable. A day wasted is a day gone and you will never get it back again. Get off your laurels and put together an accountability system that works for you and in my case, it is a time table.
